What Is A Spartan Ultra?

The Ultra event is a unique event with several Ultra-specific obstacles and challenges; the Ultra will involve 2 laps of the Beast plus an additional 4km loop per lap.

The Ultra will be geared towards true endurance-focused Spartans, with a minimum distance of 50km and 60 obstacles. Upon completion of this 30 mile test of will, successful finishers will receive a newly designed Ultra belt buckle, as well as special Ultra-branded finisher shirt and wedge medal, in the new colour of the Ultra - purple.

Please note: The Spartan Ultra will still count toward a Spartan Trifecta. The Ultra wedge can also be used to complete an Endurance trifecta (Endurance trifectas can be earned by completing specific combinations of hurricane heats, ultra and agoge events). Finishing one lap of an Ultra does not entitle a racer to a Spartan Beast medal.

For the first time, all Ultra events globally will be qualifiers for Elite and Age Group categories into the Ultra World Championship. Ultra racers will need to achieve demanding course cut-off times and there is no roll-down or maximum number of qualifiers.

To be eligible for entry into the Ultra World Championship, Elite and Age Group competitors must complete one Ultra within the following cut-off times, regardless of course location, length, terrain type or environmental conditions:

  • ELITE: a finish time of less than 10 hours (5 hours first lap, 5 hours second lap)
  • AGE GROUP: a finish time of less than 11 hours (5 hours first lap, 6 hours second lap)
  • OPEN: 16 hours

For the OPEN Ultra, the cutoff time is 8 hours for both laps.

Failing to complete an Ultra within these cut off times does not prevent a competitor from registering for another Ultra and making another attempt at qualification. Once a competitor IS qualified, any subsequent Ultra finishes will not affect their qualification status. Once a Spartan finishes an Ultra event in a qualifying time frame, they will receive an email notifying them of their qualification.

The Festival Village is scheduled to close at around 6pm; Ultra racers will not be allowed to keep going after 6pm due to nightfall. If you are prepared it shouldn't be a problem for you to finish within this time, however if there's anyone still on course past this time they will likely be taken off course by our course director or zone leaders.

Please note that all Elite and Age Group racers are expected to complete the Ultra solo and unaided. This will be enforced. Any Elite or Age Group racers receiving aid to complete an obstacle, medical assistance or leaving the race course and returning will be disqualified. Everything you will need for the race needs to be with you on course or in your transition box in transition. Racers are not allowed to leave the transition zone for any reason or receive anything from someone outside transition. This will also result in disqualification.
