2022 Championships, Series, and Qualifications

In this article:

The following outlines everything Elite and Age Group competitors need to know about earning a spot the different 2022 Championships.

 Categories Eligible for Qualification:

National/Regional Series

Any competitor may freely sign up for these events, no prior qualification is needed. The top 10 male and female finishers in either elite or each age group (with roll down) unlock entry into the Championship for their region. For example, US National Series Age Group competitors will qualify for the North American Championship.

2022 National/Regional Series are:

North America

  • United States National Series (Age Group)
  • Canadian National Series (Age Group)
  • North American Elite Series (Elite)

Europe

 Qualifying for Regional Championships

  • Elite athletes may qualify for a Regional Championship by finishing in the top 10 at any regular season event in the elite heat.
  • Age Group athletes may qualify for a Regional Championship by finishing in the top 10 of their Age Group category at any regular season event in the AG heat.
  • Both Elite and Age Group spots will offer a roll down. So if anyone in the top 10 already earned a spot, their qualification invitation will roll down to the next qualified racer.

The period for qualification for any of the Regional Championships is a rolling period (which may be more or less than 12 months), with the start and end dates determined by the window of time between the previous season’s championship and the next season’s championship.

The exact period of qualification is calculated by defining the start date as the first week-day following the previous season’s Regional Championship, and the last week-day before the first Elite heat of the next season’s Regional Championship. Local time in both locations governs the exact start and end times.

For example, the window of qualification for the 2021 European Championship was from the Monday after the 2019 European Championship in the Dolomites, Italy (0001 on Monday, 1st July 2019) to the day prior to the first Elite heat of the 2021 European Championship.

Determining Which Regional Championships Regular Season Events Qualify For

The geographical region where a regular season event is held determines which championship Elite and Age Group athletes qualify for.

For example, a regular season race held in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States would qualify Elite and Age Group athletes attending that event for the North American Championship, as Boston is located within North America.

Qualifying for the 2022 World Championship

Competitors may qualify in five ways:

  1. By ranking high enough at a single 2022 National or Regional Series event that takes place prior to 10/24/22. Spots are distributed based on the chart below
  2. Once a series has completed or on 10/24/22 (whichever comes first), any spots not claimed by qualifiers from individual events will roll down based on the series leaderboard. Spots are distributed based on the chart below.
  3. By ranking high enough at a Regional or National Championship (eg. North American, European). See the chart below for the number of spots allocated to each Regional Championship.
  4. By ranking high enough at any 2022 event in the MENA region.
  5. Throughout 2022, Spartan reserves the right to designate select regular season events eligible for World Championship qualifying points, for both Elite and Age Group categories.

The 2022 rolldown system will remain the same as the 2021 system, whereas if someone has already qualified they will not receive a 2nd invite and instead their invitation will be awarded to the next competitor that meets the criteria listed.

**Elite and Age Group Racers may sign up prior to qualifying for a spot.**

Any racer that has not qualified by meeting the standards laid out below by Monday October 24th 2022 at 12pm EDT will be moved to open with no refunds being made available for either the price difference in the heat nor the race entry itself.

2022 Trifecta World Championship:

You can sign up prior to earning your Trifecta but must complete it prior to November 1st 2022. Anyone signed up for this event who has not completed a TRIFECTA will be removed from Trifecta World Championship ranking WITHOUT a refund on November 1st 2022. By committing to this event, you are committing to a TRIFECTA. Be sure to sign up for your races if you have not done so already.

Elite, Age Group, and Open racers are welcome. You must be 18 years old on race day to be able to participate in the Trifecta World Championship. This event is meant to celebrate all Trifecta Tribe members. Racers will test their grit to earn unique Trifecta World Championship finisher swag.

Elite and Age Group racers will be eligible for Trifecta World Championship awards and prizes. Rankings will be based on racers’ cumulative time across all three distances. Sunday’s Beast race of the Elite category will feature a staggered Start: racers’ start times will be determined based on their combined time from the Sprint and Super.

  • The racer with the fastest combined time will start first.
  • The remaining racers will start based on the time difference between them and the racer with the fastest combined time (For example Joe’s combined race time for the Sprint and super is 2:05:30 and Tom’s time is 2:06:00. This means Joe will start the beast first and Tom will be released 30-seconds later).
  • Any Racer with a combined time more than 15 minutes slower than the leader will be released 15 minutes after the start.
  • All AGE GROUP brackets will have their own start waves for the Beast.

Qualifying for the Trifecta World Championship:

All heats (Elite, AG, and Open) must complete at least 1 Trifecta between November 8th 2021 and the week prior to the Trifecta world championship. For more information on Trifecta please see the Trifecta FAQ.
